What is nextDMX?
nextDMX is a standalone lighting control software designed for flexibility and ease of use.
Why is it called nextDMX4?
This is my fourth attempt at creating DMX software. The previous attempts were never released publicly, but they were important learning experiences that led to nextDMX4. Initially the focus was on creating a timeline only software, but over time it evolved into a full lighting control software with a timeline as one of its features.
There probably won't be a nextDMX5, as I plan to continuously develop and improve nextDMX4 rather than creating a new version. But who knows what the future holds!
I may eventually drop the "4" from the name if it makes sense in the future.
Where can I find the latest version of nextDMX?
You can download the latest version from the user dashboard on the website after logging in. Join the beta by joining the Discord server.
Does this documentation cover my version?
These pages always describe the latest release. If you are on an older version, some things may look different or be missing. Ask on Discord and someone will help you.
Which operating systems are supported?
Currently:
- Windows 11 (tested)
- Windows 10 (likely works, but less tested)
- Linux .deb (supported, but not always tested)
If there is enough interest, I may provide a macOS version in the future or different Linux distributions. For now, Windows is the only primary supported platform.
Will there be a Mac or Linux version?
There is currently no macOS version, but I may provide one in the future if there is enough interest. For Linux, a .deb package is available, but it is not always tested.
Is nextDMX open source?
No, nextDMX is currently closed source.
Is this a one-person project?
Yes. nextDMX is currently developed and maintained by a single developer.
Can I share screenshots or videos?
Yes. You are free to share screenshots and videos.
Do I need to be online to use nextDMX?
You need to log in via browser when first starting the app and occasionally to check your account, but you can use the software offline for a grace period.
Is nextDMX only for music-synced shows?
No. nextDMX is designed to be a standalone lighting control software.
Creating music- and time-synced shows is one of its core features (similar to working in a music DAW), but it is not the only use case.
My fixture is not in the library. What now?
You can write the definition yourself, see Create a Custom Fixture. You can also request it on Discord and it can be added to the library for everyone.
Is there documentation for every feature?
Not yet. The software is designed to be fairly intuitive and documentation will grow over time.
If something is unclear, please ask on Discord.
What is the current development status?
nextDMX is in early development. The focus is on delivering a stable, usable version for early testers. See Development State and Known Issues.
Is there a public roadmap?
Not yet. I'm still figuring out the best way to share the roadmap and development plans. For now, the best way to stay updated is to join the Discord server where I plan to share updates and plans regularly.
How do I get support or give feedback?
Join the Discord server. There are dedicated channels for support and feedback, and you can also use the feedback option in the app.
