Selection and Groups
How selection and groups decide which fixtures your actions affect.
Almost everything in nextDMX acts on the fixtures you have selected.
Selection is the target
The selection is the set of fixtures you are working on right now. Changing a value, creating an effect or applying a preset hits the current selection and nothing else.
The selection is always shared between the whole app. Selecting fixtures in the Stageview, the Patchlist or the Programmer panel all change the same selection.
The order matters too. Fanning a value across a selection follows the order in which you picked the fixtures, so selecting from the other end reverses the gradient. Shuffle order in the Tricks window randomizes it.
Groups are saved selections
A group is a selection you named and kept. Recall it and its fixtures are selected instantly.
Effects and mapping targets can point at a group directly, and then they follow its fixtures. Add a fixture to the group later and every effect and every mapped button aimed at that group picks it up.
Ghost selection
The Stageview can also show a ghost selection. It is a second selection that is not affected by your actions. It's a more darkened outline of the fixtures.
Odd and Even in the Tricks window split the selection and put the half you did not keep into the ghost. Invert ghost then swaps the two, which is how you program alternating fixtures.
