Import and Export Projects

Save, open and move a project between computers with its audio and fixtures.

nextDMX keeps your work in project files. To move a show to another computer you export a self-contained copy.

Save and open

Everything is in the File menu:

  • New Project creates a fresh new project.
  • Open loads a project file.
  • Save writes to the current file, Save As writes a copy somewhere new.

A normal project file points at the audio files and the fixture library on the machine that made it. That is fine as long as you stay on that machine.

Export a portable copy

Choose Export project from the File menu. The export bundles what a normal save leaves out, including timeline audio and the fixture definitions the project uses, so the file works on a machine that does not have them.

Import on the other machine

Choose Import project and pick the exported file. nextDMX asks to save any current work first, then loads the show with its audio and fixtures in place. Save it as a normal project afterwards and carry on.

Moving a show to a show computer

  1. Finish programming on your working machine.
  2. Export project to a USB stick.
  3. On the show computer, Import project and save it locally.
  4. Check the DMX outputs in Settings, since those live in the app rather than the project.
  5. Play a scene and a timeline item to confirm the show works as expected.
